Not about who you are—about what you can show
It is worth saying plainly: this is not an identity system. Nothing here puts a permanent label on a person or tracks them. A verifiable credential is simply a signed statement of fact—a proof. What it supports is human agency and dignity: the power to demonstrate something true about yourself, your work or your property, on your own terms.
A digital wax seal
Two old ideas, done electronically. The wax seal (cryptography) proves the statement is genuine and untampered—nobody can forge it or quietly alter it. The shared dictionary (semantics) means the statement is written so both people and computers can read exactly what it says. An authority signs it; you keep it; anyone you show it to can check it instantly.
Anyone can be an authority
"Authority" does not mean government. If you invite someone to dinner at your home, you are the authority on your own front door—the invitation is proof they are allowed in. A verifiable credential is that same permission slip, in digital form: checkable at the door, without the guest handing over their passport.
The proofs we already know
| Everyday proof | The digital version |
|---|---|
| Certificate of achievement | A committee certifies hours of community work; the resident holds the certificate and can present it to a venture partner or employer—no institutional run-around. |
| Receipt | A signed statement that a payment or exchange happened—proof both sides keep, ending "we never received it" disputes. |
| Product warranty | Not just for people: a repairer attaches a signed warranty to a solar array or appliance, stating the standard the work was done to—a machine-readable guarantee. |
| Cheque | A binding statement that value should move—proof of a financial fact without giving the recipient your whole account history. |
Dignity is the point
In the old web, proving one fact meant handing over the whole file—your identity, your history, everything. Here you show the exact certificate the moment requires and nothing more, held in your own data safe until you choose otherwise. The concession credentials page shows the working example: proving eligibility for support without exposing identity at all.
